Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) is about to revolutionize the way we experience the cosmos. On April 1, 2025, the highly anticipated Digital Dome Theatre will officially open, offering visitors a mesmerizing blend of science and spectacle. Beneath the museum’s iconic blue dome, guests will be immersed in cutting-edge visuals on a 10,000-square-foot curved screen, setting a new standard for planetarium experiences.

A Technological Marvel in the Making

Transforming the dome into a world-class venue took months of precision and engineering. Over 13 weeks, crews meticulously assembled the NanoSeam screen, ensuring a seamless display for ultra-sharp projections. In January, technicians installed 10 state-of-the-art Christie digital projectors, designed to produce breathtaking visuals. With the Digistar control system calibrated and immersive lighting added, the Digital Dome is now among the most advanced planetariums in the U.S.

The Most Breathtaking Experience in Tampa

Starting April 1, visitors can enjoy multiple daily showtimes, including:

  • Live night-sky tours hosted by MOSI’s space experts
  • 360-degree immersive films that explore the solar system, the sun’s surface, and ancient wonders
  • One show included with general admission, with additional shows available for $5

With 8K image technology, the Digital Dome delivers a sharper, brighter, and more immersive experience than its predecessor, making it a must-visit for science lovers and space enthusiasts alike.

One of the Nation’s Top STEM Experiences

Before the public grand opening, the Digital Dome Theatre will host its first-ever field trip for Hillsborough County students, giving them a front-row seat to the wonders of space. That evening, the venue will welcome astronaut Nicole Stott, a Clearwater native, as the guest of honor for an exclusive VIP grand opening event.

“This is a game-changer for Tampa Bay,” said MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith. “We can’t wait for jaws to drop when guests experience this multi-million-dollar upgrade, solidifying MOSI as a premier STEM destination.”

The Biggest Opening This Spring in Tampa Bay

Replacing the Saunders Planetarium, which last operated in 2017, the new Digital Dome Theatre was made possible through generous private, foundation, and community support. Featuring an 8K projection system, it surpasses previous film technology by offering brighter visuals, deeper colors, and an unmatched sense of realism.

This cutting-edge venue is poised to redefine science and space exploration in Tampa Bay, ensuring that MOSI continues to be a leader in STEM education and innovation.
