Tampa Bay Ferry Returns in 2026: A New Era for Cross-Bay Travel

The Tampa Bay Ferry is making a highly anticipated return in 2026, marking a fresh chapter in the region’s waterfront transportation. After docking for the final time on April 30, 2025, the beloved Cross-Bay Ferry left residents and visitors reminiscing about breezy rides that carried them to some of the area’s biggest events. From the “Women’s Final Four” to the “Gasparilla Festival of the Arts,” the ferry became a staple for stress-free travel and scenic views across the bay.

Funding Secures a Brighter Future

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation approved a $4.86 million grant transfer from HART (Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority) to PSTA (Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority). This major funding shift allows PSTA to invest in new high-speed ferries, a significant upgrade from leasing older vessels. These modern boats could bring year-round service, longer operating hours, and exclusive event rides for Tampa Bay Lightning games and waterfront festivals in St. Pete.

The Path to Launch

The bidding process for private operators is now open, with proposals due by August 28, 2025. The chosen operator will be selected based on cost, experience, and business strategy, with an initial five-year contract and the possibility of extension. Once the winner is named, PSTA will begin acquiring vessels and preparing them for launch, aiming for early 2026—perfectly timed for the spring travel season.

Expanded Service and Accessibility

Unlike past schedules, the new operator is expected to run ferries every one to two hours, offering significantly more departures to meet demand. Travelers can look forward to scenic rides that connect the cultural hubs of Tampa and St. Pete. The ferry remains a top choice for attending events like Localtopia, St. Pete Pride, and the Mainsail Art Festival, or simply enjoying the Saturday Morning Market without the hassle of traffic.

A Scenic Ride Across the Bay

For Tampa residents, the ferry means more than transportation—it’s an experience. The Tampa Convention Center dock links directly to the Tampa Riverwalk, offering easy access to downtown attractions. On the St. Pete side, locals hope the dock will once again sit just outside North Straub Park, placing riders in the vibrant heart of the Sunshine City. Whether for festivals, sports, or sightseeing, the ferry promises to remain the most scenic way to travel across the bay.

With modern upgrades, expanded service, and a growing demand for stress-free travel, the Tampa Bay Ferry is set to redefine cross-bay commuting. The countdown to 2026 has begun—will you be on board for its first voyage back?
