The long-awaited Tampa Bay Ferry is officially making its comeback — and this time, it arrives stronger, faster, and more community-focused than ever. With Hubbard’s Marina stepping in as the new operator, the region is gearing up for a revived waterway experience that blends convenience, innovation, and enhanced regional connectivity.
A Major Decision to Bring the Ferry Back
After months of uncertainty, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority approved Hubbard’s Marina to relaunch the revamped ferry service. This marks a significant return for a service that has ferried passengers across Tampa Bay since 2016 but had shut down abruptly amid regional disagreements earlier this year.
The board also committed to purchasing new vessels, expanding capacity, and encouraging a more efficient cross-bay commute.
A Five-Year Agreement to Transform the Bay
Under a newly approved five-year agreement worth up to $16.59 million, Tampa Bay Sea Taxi Inc., operated by Hubbard’s Marina, will manage the revived service. The Transit Authority announced potential fare reductions, increased departure frequency, and a more streamlined route for everyday commuters.
Board members also approved the purchase of a faster and larger ferry, increasing passenger capacity from 149 on the former Cross Bay Ferry to 250 seats, offering a more spacious and efficient travel experience.
A Federal Grant Paves the Way for Expansion
To support this ambitious revival, the Transit Authority will use a $4.8 million federal grant to purchase a larger used vessel currently operating in San Francisco. At the same time, the authority is still scouting for a second ferry, ensuring long-term stability and increased service reliability.
These additions highlight the region’s commitment to sustainable transit, economic growth, and improved waterfront mobility.
Mid-2026: When the New Ferry Sets Sail
According to Alvin Burns, procurement director for the Pinellas Transit Authority, service is expected to launch in mid-2026. Initial departures will connect two of the region’s most iconic waterfront hubs — the Tampa Convention Center and Bayshore Drive in St. Petersburg.
This route aims to strengthen urban access, reduce roadway congestion, and provide a scenic, stress-free alternative to interstate travel.
A New Dock to Boost St. Petersburg’s Waterfront
St. Petersburg is doubling down on ferry expansion. Last month, the city approved over $336,700 to build a permanent dock at the St. Pete Pier, strategically located near the St. Petersburg Museum of History and the Dolphin Parking Lot.
City engineering director Brejesh Prayman confirmed the new dock will accommodate tall ships, offer docking on both sides, and elevate the pier as a major maritime attraction.
A Symbol of Regional Transportation Debate
The ferry has long been central to Tampa Bay’s transportation discussions. Supporters argue the service reduces traffic congestion, improves affordable commuting, and boosts cross-bay accessibility. Critics say the investment may be wasteful, questioning the service’s long-term sustainability.
Tampa council member Guido Maniscalco emphasized its benefit, stating:
“Any alternative transportation options will help create regionalism and connectivity.”
The Tampa and St. Petersburg councils both agreed to contribute $350,000 per year for five years, ensuring the ferry remains a viable regional resource.
A New Tool for a Growing Region
As Maniscalco noted, “This is another tool in the toolbox to get traffic off the street.”
For a region experiencing rapid population growth, the revived ferry offers a practical, scenic, and environmentally conscious way to move across the bay. The Tampa Bay Ferry represents a meaningful step toward a more interconnected, sustainable future for residents and visitors alike.
The countdown to mid-2026 has already begun — and if this revamped service delivers on its promise, Tampa Bay’s waters may soon become the region’s most exciting new highway. Stay tuned… the story is just getting started.
