Before the sun rose on Saturday, about 60 dedicated volunteers at Winners’ Worship Center in Tampa were busy preparing to distribute thousands of free turkeys to families in need. This annual event, rooted in the spirit of giving, is a cornerstone of the church’s mission to support its community. “This number has grown,” shared Pastor Brenda Fruster, reflecting on the overwhelming response.
“As soon as we put out the flier, people started registering.”
This year, approximately 2,000 people signed up for the church’s annual Day of Thanks. Pastor Fruster, who began this tradition with her late husband Robert two decades ago, emphasized its purpose:
“It’s all about helping others. It’s about not just getting enough for me and my family but asking, ‘How can I help your family? What can I do to pay it forward?’”
By dawn, the impact of their efforts was evident, with cars lined up and the queue stretching down the street. Pastor Fruster acknowledged the hardships the community has faced, saying, “Because of Helene and Milton, people need the church and organizations more than ever. Many are still without food or homes. Some are staying in hotels. We’re doing our best to restore the community.”
Families who attended expressed heartfelt gratitude. Bertha Williams shared, “It’s a blessing for people that don’t have much. The hurricane has messed them up a lot.” Another attendee, Shakema Jacobs, noted,
“It makes a big difference. I was out of power and lost a lot of food. This is helping out a lot.”
Volunteers distributed groceries in partnership with Farm Share, a nonprofit organization that has remained steadfast despite challenges. Pastor Fruster highlighted their commitment, stating,
“When we reached out to them, they faced hurdles with Helene and Milton. Yet, they promised to try, and they have been faithful.”
Pastor Fruster underscored the collective effort required, saying,
“One company, one church, or one person cannot do this alone. It takes a village to accomplish what we’re doing. We are deeply thankful.”

Beyond turkey giveaways, Winners’ Worship Center provided social services, including Medicaid assistance, housing resources, and medical care. Pastor Fruster explained,
“In events like this, you might think it’s all about Thanksgiving or a turkey. But we’re on the ground every day, meeting the needs of people in homes and those under bridges.”
The church’s year-round resource center reflects their holistic approach. “It’s not just about a handout,” said Pastor Fruster.
“We teach people to sustain themselves. It’s like teaching someone to fish, so they can thrive long-term.”
For the first time, the Day of Thanks also offered water baptisms, symbolizing hope and renewal. Winners’ Worship Center continues to exemplify the power of community, compassion, and faith.
