Remembering Chi Chi Rodriguez: The Heart and Soul of Tampa Bay Golf
Hall of Fame golfer Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez is being remembered with deep reverence in Pinellas County. Known not only for his extraordinary golfing skills but also for his philanthropic spirit, Rodriguez forged profound connections with the Clearwater community after founding a foundation dedicated to helping at-risk students.
Clearwater Mayor Bruce Rector reflected on the lasting legacy left behind by this golfing legend. “Chi Chi Rodriguez has left his mark on this facility,” Rector remarked, acknowledging the significant impact Rodriguez had on the community.
Outside the Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy, near a flagpole lowered to half-staff, the legend’s shoe prints are immortalized in cement—a poignant symbol of his enduring presence. “I’ve been out here many, many times with my son playing golf, and today is the first day I ever noticed his footprints next to the flag,” Rector said, highlighting the deep emotional connection felt by many.
The foundation Rodriguez started in 1979 has since grown, expanding its reach to serve more students. The property now also features a public 18-hole golf course, integrating his passion for the sport with his commitment to education. “He started this academy based on being inspired by Mother Teresa, who challenged him,” Rector shared, reflecting on the profound motivation behind Rodriguez’s efforts.
The foundation’s educational programs currently benefit 3,600 Pinellas County students annually, many of whom are at risk. “He has done many great things, not just for our community, but for the people who work at this facility. We mourn with them the loss of a great leader,” Rector said, emphasizing the far-reaching impact of Rodriguez’s leadership and compassion.
Rodriguez was a pioneer who not only changed the way people watch and play golf but also brought joy to the sport with his famous celebratory sword dance on the green. “He was very serious about winning,” Rector noted. “He was a very good golfer. He brought a fun to the game of golf that was badly needed at the time and certainly has lived on.”
Despite an outstanding career filled with achievements, Rodriguez often expressed that his proudest work was the facility in Clearwater. “He said late in his life that material things and tournament wins meant much less to him than this,” Rector recalled, underscoring the significance of Rodriguez’s philanthropic endeavors.
PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan also paid tribute to Rodriguez, reflecting on his remarkable dual legacy. “Chi Chi Rodriguez’s passion for charity and outreach was surpassed only by his incredible talent with a golf club in his hand,” Monahan said. “A vibrant, colorful personality both on and off the golf course, he will be missed dearly by the PGA TOUR and those whose lives he touched in his mission to give back. The PGA TOUR sends its deepest condolences to the entire Rodriguez family during this difficult time.”
The foundation plans to continue honoring the legacy of Chi Chi Rodriguez, ensuring that his contributions to both golf and the community will not be forgotten. To learn more about the foundation and donate, click here. WFLA initially published the story.
