Tampa General Hospital Advances Surgical Care with AI

Tampa General Hospital has unveiled Apella, an advanced technology platform that harnesses artificial intelligence to provide crucial data and insights, significantly enhancing safety in the operating room.

Apella equips perioperative teams with a 360-degree real-time view of operating rooms, enabling them to make well-informed decisions, respond swiftly to immediate needs, anticipate upcoming steps, and effectively plan future operations.

This cutting-edge technology leverages AI, computer vision, and communications to deliver predictive procedure times, turnover times, and staffing recommendations.

“Apella is a partner, and our opportunities to deepen this exciting partnership are extensive. The technology’s ability to look deeper into process efficiencies, predict workflow improvements, and find opportunities for quality improvement in our cases are just a few ways we can use this technology to work toward better patient outcomes and improved efficiencies,” stated Dr. Murray Shames, medical chief of staff at TGH, in a statement.

The AI technology captures key highlights to identify patterns, pinpoint opportunities for improvement, and support continuous learning and training efforts, according to a release.

The ultimate goal is to reduce patient time in the operating room, minimizing risk and speeding up recovery. Additionally, improved room and equipment turnover boosts the overall efficiency of each operating room, the release states.
