Tampa General Hospital to Transform Documentation with AI Technology

AI Documentation Tool Set for Launch at Tampa General

Tampa General Hospital is leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline documentation processes and enhance patient care.

TGH has partnered with Nuance to equip over 500 physicians with DAX Copilot, an ambient listening tool that captures patient symptom details, observations, and experiences. According to a release, the AI program converts these conversations into clinical summaries.

“Simply put, documentation is necessary, but it’s a growing burden on all involved,” said John Couris, hospital president and CEO. “With the help of AI, we’re easing the burden of documentation on providers and giving them the additional time to focus on our top priority — our patients.”

Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.

Earlier this year, DAX Copilot technology became available for integration into the Epic electronic health record system used at TGH. Unlike voice-to-text transcription, this AI tool identifies voices, records patient history, and summarizes key points while adhering to HIPAA requirements.

“As the documentation burden on providers grows, they have less time to spend with their patients and are often tethered to their keyboards in exam rooms,” said Dr. Nishit Patel, VP and chief medical informatics officer at TGH.

Data shows that U.S. physicians spend over four hours daily on paperwork or electronic documentation.

Nuance, based in Massachusetts, reports that nearly three-quarters of physicians using this technology experience less burnout and fatigue.
