Top 3 Civic News You Need to Know in Tampa Bay

As summer draws to a close and school is back in full swing, it’s time to catch up on the latest civic updates in Tampa Bay. Fortunately, we’re here to keep you informed with the key changes happening in your community:

Ybor 7th Avenue Rebricking

Take a step back in time without needing a time machine by visiting Ybor City’s 7th Avenue. The city has recently completed a major project to rebrick this vibrant street, restoring it to its historic charm from 60 years ago. Approximately 80,000 historic bricks from Tampa’s preserved supply have been laid between 15th and 17th streets. This initiative, funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency, aims to smooth traffic flow and enhance the area’s walkability.

Pinellas Stormwater Funding

Following Tropical Storm Debby’s wastewater spill into Tampa Bay’s waters, stormwater funding has become a pressing concern in Pinellas County. Local officials have approved nearly $34 million to install public sewers across five housing developments in Largo and Seminole, as reported by St. Pete Catalyst. This investment will help prevent wastewater, which may contain harmful bacteria and chemicals, from overflowing during storms and contaminating local waters.

HART Funding Overhaul

Significant changes might be on the horizon for the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART). According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, plans are underway for a potential $6.73 million upgrade to the agency’s GPS-based wireless data communications system. If the HART Finance and Audit Committee approves, Clever Devices Ltd. will implement a new location and dispatch system for the fleet of buses and streetcars, enabling real-time vehicle tracking and providing riders with more accurate delay updates.
