University of Tampa Welcomes Robert Indiana’s Legendary 'LOVE' Sculpture

The University of Tampa has unveiled—thanks to the generous philanthropy of Gene and Patsy McNichols—one of the world’s most famous sculptures: a six-foot “LOVE” sculpture by Robert Indiana. This iconic piece now resides on the lawn east of Plant Hall.

Described by the Museum of Modern Art as a Pop Art masterpiece, “LOVE” holds a timeless place in both the history of art and in the hearts of people globally. Robert Indiana first conceptualized this iconic design in 1964, with the inaugural “LOVE” sculpture being crafted from core-ten steel in 1970. Today, more than 50 versions of this iconic “LOVE” artwork are installed in cities across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Indiana’s distinctive tilting of the letter “O” not only forms a perfect square with the other letters but also serves as a reminder of the fragility of love.

In addition to “LOVE,” the university has acquired four other sculptures:

  • “Zephyr” by Jeremy Guy, symbolizing the quality of persistence.
  • “Open Window Monument” by Ted Schaal, representing a spiritual characteristic.
  • “DNA of Success” by Robert Romero, embodying the principle of continued learning.
  • “On a Roll” by Jack Hill, capturing the essence of a sense of humor.

A new sculpture trail is coming to the University of Tampa.

“As many say, we need more love in the world,” said UT President Ron Vaughn, who is set to retire on May 31. “This will be a highly visible campus location where it can be enjoyed by students and the public,” Vaughn emphasized.

Gene and Patsy McNichols donated the funds to acquire the “LOVE” sculpture in honor of Gene’s father, Robert L. McNichols, who founded McNichols Company, known as The Hole Story. The McNichols family are longtime supporters of UT and have also contributed to the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. Gene McNichols holds the title of Chair Emeritus of the UT Board of Trustees.

Interactive public art pieces in the heart of the city.

The McNichols’ donation will also finance an innovative and interactive sculpture trail, anchored by the “LOVE” sculpture, adding 15-20 pieces to the university’s 110-acre downtown campus.

Sculptures selected for the trail will vary in size, style, and mediums and will be created by both nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. These pieces are being chosen or commissioned specifically to inspire conversation and learning about essential human qualities.

The sculpture trail will be officially named the McNichols Sculpture Trail. Visit the University of Tampa’s website for more information on campus activities and major news.
