Help Keep Tampa Bay Clean with Bead Recycling This Gasparilla
As the Gasparilla Children’s Parade on January 18 and Pirate Fest the following Saturday approach, Tampa’s Department of Solid Waste is calling on all pirates to participate in bead recycling Tampa efforts. The Bead-Free Bay initiative offers a simple way for parade-goers to recycle unwanted beads at designated collection sites, reducing plastic waste and helping keep Tampa Bay clean.
Where to Drop Off Your Recyclable Beads
From January 27 through May 2025, you can participate in bead recycling Tampa by dropping off unwanted beads at the following locations during their regular hours:
Drop-Off Locations:
- Kate Jackson Community Center – 821 S Rome Ave.
- Loretta Ingraham Recreation Complex – 1611 N Hubert Ave.
- Copeland Park Center – 11001 N 15th St.
- MacDonald Training Center – 5420 W Cypress St.
The city urges participants to drop off only beads—no costumes, props, or trash. Recycling your beads helps reduce plastic waste and ensures they can be used again in future parades.
Why Bead Recycling Matters for Tampa Bay
Throwing beads or other plastic items into Tampa Bay is illegal under federal and state laws. When beads end up in the water, they break down into microplastics, which can harm marine life and pollute Tampa’s beautiful waterways. Bead Reuse Program: How It Works
Since 2018, the Bead Reuse Program has provided a way to recycle and repurpose beads from the Gasparilla parade. The collected beads are carefully sorted, cleaned, and repackaged for future celebrations. This initiative is led by the MacDonald Training Center, a non-profit organization supporting individuals with disabilities, and Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, whose volunteers assist in preparing beads for reuse. Since its launch, the program has successfully recycled over 20,750 pounds of beads.

Mayor Jane Castor recognizes Tampa residents for their efforts, saying, “Pirates have been incredibly generous in recent years, and we hope to break a record this year.” The Bead-Free Bay campaign is supported by key partners, including the Florida Aquarium, Pirate Water Taxi, and other local organizations committed to keeping Tampa Bay clean.
