One person was killed, and another was seriously injured in a wrong-way driving incident that led to a deadly head-on crash in Tampa early Saturday morning.
The tragic accident occurred around 2:52 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the eastbound lanes of Selmon Expressway, according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Authorities say a 40-year-old Bartow woman, driving a Honda FIT, entered the expressway going west in the eastbound lanes. Investigators are still working to determine where and how the driver got onto the road in the wrong direction.
A 33-year-old Orlando man, travelling east in a Toyota Yaris, collided head-on with the Honda FIT near milepost 6 in Downtown Tampa. The impact caused both vehicles to rotate, sending the Toyota Yaris into a concrete barrier wall, while the Honda FIT stopped in the middle of the road.
The Orlando man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FHP, while the Bartow woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The crash remains under investigation, and no further details are available now.
