Tampa’s newest green space, MacDill 48 Park (6415 S. MacDill Ave.), is now officially open to the public. This expansive 48-acre park offers a perfect retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. With cooler winter temperatures ahead, it’s bound to become a favorite destination for runners and walkers alike.

Scenic Trails and Innovative Stormwater System

The park boasts a one-mile scenic trail that winds through a lush forest canopy and encircles a 10-acre stormwater pond capable of holding 25 million gallons of water. MacDill 48 Park’s innovative stormwater management system not only enhances the park’s aesthetic but also serves as a crucial environmental feature.

Boardwalks, Amenities, and Wildlife

Accessible through three entrances, the park includes a variety of amenities such as covered picnic tables, pond-side benches, and a wide 14-foot boardwalk that stretches over a natural wetland. Open from sunrise to sunset, the park welcomes pedestrians and cyclists but restricts vehicle entry, creating a serene and safe environment.

Nature lovers can spot native wildlife, including gopher tortoises, bald eagles, and a variety of fish species. Plans for two additional entrances are underway, promising even greater access to this urban oasis in the future.

Environmental Impact and Flood Relief

MacDill 48 Park’s stormwater pond serves as a key feature for flood relief, benefiting the southeast portion of Tampa’s Lower Peninsula Watershed, including areas south of El Prado Boulevard. With over 12,000 linear feet of box culverts, pipes, and drainage inlets, the park’s green infrastructure reduces pollutants like oils and debris from entering Hillsborough Bay.

Award-Winning Design and Community Impact

The thoughtful combination of recreation and environmental innovation earned MacDill 48 Park an excellence in engineering and public works award. This recognition from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Public Works Association, and the American Council of Engineering Companies highlights the park’s meaningful contribution to the Tampa community.
