On Saturday morning, Raymond James Stadium was transformed into a vibrant sea of pink as over 20,000 participants joined the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. This powerful gathering celebrated survivors, supported those currently battling the disease, and collectively raised over $542,000 for vital local initiatives.
Supporting Local Cancer Programs
Funds raised at the walk will benefit crucial services like the Hope Lodge near Moffitt Cancer Center, a free sanctuary for cancer patients and their caregivers. Another beneficiary is Drive to Recovery, a program ensuring patients have reliable transportation to their treatments, even when they’re unable to arrange it themselves.
A Survivor’s Journey: Delaney Driver’s Story
Delaney Driver, a breast cancer survivor, shared her journey through diagnosis and treatment at just 29 years old. After undergoing chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation, she completed her active treatment earlier this month, just days before her 30th birthday. Diagnosed in December after discovering a suspicious lump, she recalls, “It was a gut-wrenching moment… but even more so for my friends and family.”

Advocating for Early Detection
Driver emphasized the importance of self-exams and awareness: “Know your normal, and advocate for yourself,” she urged. Her experience highlights the value of positivity and support from loved ones and medical teams, which helped her navigate one of life’s most challenging experiences. “Even though it’s hard, there’s a silver lining to everything,” Driver added, encouraging others to maintain hope.
Ruth Black: Celebrating 11 Years Cancer-Free
Ruth Black, an 11-year survivor who endured 35 rounds of chemo and radiation, reflected on her journey and the relief of surviving. “When you hear the word cancer, you think, ‘oh, I’m going to die,’ but I’m still here, still striving,” she shared. For Black, the overwhelming support at events like this walk brings hope. “I love seeing everyone come together. That’s what we need today: love.” FOX 13 News initially published the story.
