The Georgia Aquarium has successfully released a rehabilitated manatee back into the waters of Tampa Bay after recovering from a devastating injury.

Tay Tay’s Journey to Recovery

Tay Tay, a young manatee, was found earlier this year with injuries from a boat strike. Due to her fragile state, she required intensive veterinary care to regain weight and recover before she could return to the wild.

Partnership for Wildlife Rehabilitation

The Georgia Aquarium, working with the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership, provided the necessary care for Tay Tay at their off-site facility. Their dedication ensured that she could return to her natural habitat strong and healthy.

Assisted Release into Tampa Waters

When Tay Tay was ready to rejoin her species, Zoo Tampa partnered with aquarium staff to release her at the TECO Manatee Viewing Center. This collaboration highlights the commitment of multiple organizations to Florida’s wildlife conservation.

A Warm Welcome Home

Photos and videos capture Tay Tay’s return to warm waters, where she was seen swimming alongside other manatees in what is now her new, permanent home. Her release is a symbol of hope and resilience for a threatened species.

Florida’s Threatened Manatees

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida manatees are listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, with only about 8,350 individuals remaining. Native to Florida, these gentle giants thrive in the state’s warm waters, including rivers, bays, canals, and estuaries.
