Shoppers in Tampa Bay eagerly opened their wallets this holiday season, showcasing a significant uptick in retail activity. According to MasterCard, retail sales were up by about 4% compared to the previous year, indicating a stronger-than-expected spending trend.
A Thriving Season for Local Businesses
Andrea Messina, owner of Joe and Sons Olive Oil in Hyde Park, experienced a robust holiday shopping period. “We’ve actually only got a couple of bottles left. We’re tapped out,” Messina said, reflecting the high demand for her products. Despite challenges earlier this year, including the twin hurricanes Helene and Milton that disrupted businesses and redirected shoppers’ spending to general contractors, Messina noted a late surge in sales.
Record Holiday Spending Across the Nation
The National Retail Federation anticipated a 2.5% to 3.5% rise in retail sales, aligning closely with MasterCard’s report of a 3.8% increase. On average, shoppers spent $902 this season, a notable rise from $833 two years ago. “That is record spending for the holidays,” said retail journalist Trae Bodge. However, Bodge emphasized that while spending was higher, it remained relatively conservative year-over-year.
Challenges for Local Boutiques
Local boutiques like Joe and Sons Olive Oil face dual challenges: the continued rise in digital shopping—up 6.7% this year—and a modest 2.9% growth in in-store sales. Despite these trends, boutique owners like Messina emphasize the uniqueness of their offerings. “These are all unique items that you really just can’t get anywhere else,” Messina stated, highlighting how specialized inventory combats online retail competition.
Holiday Shoppers Seek Bargains
According to polls, three-quarters of holiday shoppers this year prioritized finding bargains, driving strategic spending habits. The final five days of the season alone accounted for 10% of all holiday spending, reinforcing the idea that last-minute shopping plays a critical role in the season’s success. FOX 13 News initially published the story.
