The City of Tampa’s Department of Solid Waste has temporarily suspended recycling collection in response to the “unprecedented amounts” of storm debris left by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The city’s decision comes after both storms slammed into Florida within just a few weeks. On Friday, all residential recycling services were halted, with the city set to resume operations by Monday.
Focus Shifts to Storm Debris Collection
Over the weekend, crews will prioritize storm debris removal, shifting their efforts to help bring neighborhoods back to pre-hurricane conditions. While regular garbage services for residential and commercial customers continue, all yard waste and recycling collection remains suspended until further notice. Residents are encouraged to follow specific guidelines for storm debris disposal to ensure efficient collection.
Breakdown of Service Suspensions and Ongoing Operations
- Storm Debris: Collection is currently underway, and residents should follow the city’s disposal guidelines.
- Commercial Customers: All collection services are running as usual.
- Residential Customers: Garbage services are operational, but yard waste and recycling services are suspended.
- SWEEP and Yard Waste: Suspended until further notice.
How to Properly Dispose of Storm Debris
Storm debris collection crews will be picking up damaged household items, construction materials, and vegetative storm debris from curbsides. To ensure proper disposal, follow these key guidelines:
- Household Storm Debris: Place damaged household items and construction debris separately from vegetative storm debris. Keep them at least three feet away from obstructions such as parked vehicles.
- Vegetative Storm Debris: Shrubs, palm fronds, tree limbs, and other green debris should be placed in a pile or a non-city-issued container at the curb.
Self-Disposal Options for Storm Debris
For those looking to self-dispose, Tampa offers free disposal at the McKay Bay Disposal Complex for both mixed and vegetative storm debris. Simply show ID for free entry, although private haulers will incur a fee. Two additional locations are available for vegetative debris disposal: 22nd Street Park and Gadsen Park, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m..
