Hurricane Milton recently shut down all Tampa Bay area schools after making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm. The region is now grappling with widespread outages, and many schools and residents remain without power, facing debris and severe road conditions.
So, when will schools in the affected counties reopen? Here’s the latest update on the status of school reopenings across Tampa Bay.
Hillsborough County
Schools in Hillsborough County will remain closed for students on Monday, Oct. 14. The school district is addressing significant issues, including flooding, uprooted trees, and power outages at 172 schools. Reopening will depend on the restoration of power, facility safety, and road conditions.
“We know there are questions about makeup days. We are in contact with the Florida Department of Education on our status.”
Pasco County
In Pasco County, schools will also be closed on Monday, Oct. 14. An update regarding Tuesday will be provided on Monday. The county is dealing with power outages, facility repairs, and hazardous road conditions. In addition, fuel shortages are affecting school buses and other forms of transportation.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families. We encourage everyone to follow local guidance, avoid unsafe areas, and conserve fuel as much as possible during this time of recovery.”
Hernando County
The Hernando County school district will offer an update this weekend regarding Monday’s reopening. As of Saturday, six schools are without power and covered in debris.
“We are working closely with Withlacoochee Electric and Duke Energy to restore power as soon as possible. We are also coordinating with county officials to ensure that roads are safe for students and staff.”
Outside athletic events will proceed as scheduled, while other events may be rescheduled as necessary.
Manatee County
Manatee County schools will stay closed on Monday, Oct. 14. Like other counties, they plan to release further updates on Monday regarding the status of Tuesday’s reopening.
Sarasota County
In Sarasota County, schools will remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14, but the county anticipates reopening by early to mid-week.
“If your family is experiencing challenges that prevent your child from returning to school, please contact your school directly. We are committed to meeting your child’s educational needs during this time.”
Pinellas County
Schools in Pinellas County will stay closed on Monday, Oct. 14. Updates regarding Tuesday will be released on Monday. All sports and extracurricular activities are canceled until further notice.
Citrus County
Citrus County schools will be open on Monday, Oct. 14.
“While things may look different, classrooms are safe and ready for students and staff.”
Polk County
Polk County schools must remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15, but they are expected to reopen on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
