The streets of Tampa were filled with festive energy as over 6,000 participants gathered for the Hot Chocolate Run, turning the Tampa Convention Center into a vibrant hub of fitness, fun, and generosity. The sounds of joyful runners and holiday cheer echoed throughout the event, as both seasoned athletes and casual participants came together to celebrate the season.
Dressed for the Occasion
Runners arrived in full holiday gear, from Santa hats to reindeer antlers, bringing an infectious energy to the event. Sam Drossos captured the excitement perfectly: “The horns going off, the people lined up, the people dressed up in Christmas gear, it’s a blast.”
A Purpose-Driven Run
While the focus of the event was on the fun of running and the promise of hot chocolate, the Hot Chocolate Run’s heart was its role as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Florida. The event drew together a community of passionate individuals committed to supporting a worthy cause and celebrating the spirit of giving.
Support from the Heart
Chris Lawhorn, a long-time supporter of Special Olympics Florida, expressed his deep connection to the cause. “I’ve been helping with the Special Olympics for almost 20 years and I have seen how much work they do and how much everyone enjoys it,” he shared.
Jackie Dryden, Director of Special Olympics Florida, emphasized the critical need for community events like this. “We have more than 75,000 athletes in the state of Florida, and it takes an incredible amount of funding and money to support the programs that we offer,” she explained. “Having events like this with so many racers wanting to contribute to a great cause is incredible and really makes a positive impact on our athletes.”
A Welcoming Atmosphere
Brenda Hawkins, one of the runners, spoke about the warm and inviting nature of the event: “People are just very friendly and want to get out there and just have a great time.”
The Sweetest Miles with Purpose
One participant summed up the event perfectly: “It’s like Christmas morning, but with running shoes and hot chocolate!” The Hot Chocolate Run proved that the sweetest miles are those run with purpose, where every step is filled with both hope and chocolate.
