We’ve officially emerged from hurricane season, and Tampa Bay residents can collectively exhale. However, the recovery process from Hurricanes Milton and Helene is far from complete. Here’s a closer look at the latest updates and important civic news affecting the region.

FEMA Approves Additional Aid for Recovery

FEMA has allocated a significant ~$80.7 million to support Hillsborough County’s debris removal efforts. To date, the City of Tampa has reported the collection of an astounding 1,194,420 cubic yards of debris, underscoring the extensive impact of the hurricanes. Madeira Beach, one of the hardest-hit areas, has also received additional aid, with a grant of ~$6.5 million to aid its recovery.

New Hazard Mitigation Grant Program on the Way

Many residents are still reeling after Hurricane Helene’s 8+ ft storm surge and Hurricane Milton’s relentless 18+ inches of rainfall. In response, the state is preparing a new residential hazard mitigation grant program. This initiative will provide funding to help residents rebuild or demolish damaged homes.

The program aims to streamline the process by offering assistance with applications, documentation, and contractor coordination. While a launch timeline is not yet available, the initiative offers hope to countless families still struggling to rebuild their lives.

Sheriff Chad Chronister to Stay in Hillsborough

Last week, Sheriff Chad Chronister was nominated by President-elect Trump to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration. However, on Tuesday night, Chronister announced his withdrawal from the nomination, citing his ongoing commitment to the citizens of Hillsborough County. In a post on X, he emphasized that there is still much work to be done locally, ensuring continued focus on his initiatives in the region.
