Avianca, the Colombian airline, is gearing up to launch a direct Tampa to Bogota flight in 2025. This exciting development was confirmed by Tampa International Airport (TPA) last Friday, marking a significant milestone in TPA’s mission to enhance global connectivity. As TPA CEO Joe Lopano aptly stated, “The significance of a new Avianca route between Tampa and Bogota is enormous, being TPA’s first to a new continent in nearly 50 years and a long-awaited nonstop connection to South America.” This route is anticipated to cater to business travelers, family connections, and tourists eager to explore vibrant destinations.
Proposed Routes: Expanding Avianca’s Footprint in the Americas
The Tampa to Bogota route is part of Avianca’s broader strategy to establish robust connections across the Americas. Additional proposed routes include:
- Bogota to Tampa
- Medellin to Fort Lauderdale
- San Jose to Miami
- Guatemala City to Miami
- San Salvador to Managua to Fort Lauderdale
These routes will bring Avianca’s direct Florida-Latin America connections to a total of 16, reinforcing Florida as a pivotal gateway for international travel.
Strengthening Connections and Boosting Opportunities
Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca, emphasized the importance of Florida as a strategic hub, stating, “Florida has historically been a key gateway for connections to Latin America, which is why it is essential for us to contribute to reuniting families, boosting tourism, and promoting business.” So far, Avianca has transported over 4 million passengers on 27,000+ flights to and from the U.S. in 2024, a testament to their commitment to meeting customer needs.
Tampa-Bogota: A Gateway to 75+ Destinations
The new Tampa to Bogota flight will provide travelers access to over 75 destinations in more than 25 countries across the Americas and Europe. According to Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia, this route not only enhances connectivity but also underscores the growing importance of Tampa Bay as a travel hub for tourists and business professionals alike.
Tampa International Airport’s Growth
To accommodate this growing demand, TPA is undergoing a $1.5 billion Airside D expansion, which will be completed alongside the appointment of a new CEO, Michael Stephens, in 2025. This expansion signifies TPA’s commitment to advancing its infrastructure and global reach, making it a premier destination for international flights.
