As the holiday season kicks into gear, Chief Lee Bercaw and other officers shared their protective measures to keep shoppers and retailers safe during a Tuesday morning press conference. With foot traffic increasing across malls and shopping centres, the focus is on ensuring everyone can shop and celebrate without concerns for safety.

To meet the demands of the bustling season, police presence will increase in shopping areas of all sizes. Officers encourage the public to remain vigilant: avoid distractions like phones, park in well-lit spaces, and be mindful of their surroundings. Simple precautions like these can make a big difference in keeping holiday outings safe.

Officials are also sounding the alarm on package theft and scams, which tend to rise during the holidays. In December 2023, package thefts doubled, according to the Tampa Police Department. Porch pirates remain an ever-present concern, especially with more deliveries happening throughout the season. Shoppers should take steps like retrieving packages quickly and using secure drop-off options.

Chief Bercaw emphasized the importance of a visible police presence in shopping areas and neighbourhoods to deter criminal activity. “With more people out shopping and receiving packages, we want to remind everyone to stay alert and take simple precautions to protect themselves and their belongings,” he said.

Drivers are also being urged to exercise caution, as impaired driving incidents increase during the holiday period. The police remind everyone to stay sober behind the wheel and report any suspicious activity to the department to help maintain a safer community.
