The annual Tampa Pig Jig made its return to Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park on Sunday, having been rescheduled due to the damage left by Hurricane Milton. This beloved fall event brings the community together with an irresistible blend of barbecue, bourbon, and live music.
From Backyard Bash to Major Fundraiser
What began over a decade ago as a small backyard gathering has evolved into a massive fundraiser. Friends first held the Pig Jig to support their friend Will Wellman, diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called FSGS. Since then, the Pig Jig has expanded to help raise millions in donations.
A Personal Journey Through Kidney Disease
“For me, I had kidney failure within 18 months,” Wellman told FOX 13. “I went from being a healthy 25-year-old to relying on dialysis to stay alive while awaiting a cure.” Today, he spends five hours a day, three times a week, in treatment.
Hopewell Foundation’s Impact
To sustain their efforts, Wellman’s friends established the HopeWill Foundation, leading Pig Jig events in Tampa and other locations across the country. These events support NephCure, the only nonprofit solely dedicated to finding a cure for FSGS.
Stories of Resilience and Strength
Sunday’s event included a special brunch with NephCure staff and FSGS patients. Among them was Kelly Helm, whose daughter Macy has lived with FSGS since age three. Now 18, Macy has endured two kidney transplants and ongoing dialysis, but Helm’s presence at Pig Jig shares their journey with hope and pride.
A Community of Support for FSGS Patients
For Wellman, Pig Jig has become a vital space for FSGS patients to gather, share their stories, and find comfort. “It’s like they suddenly have a new family around them,” he said. “Tampa Bay rallies around them, bringing hope that we’re closer to a cure with each year.” FOX 13 News initially published the story.
