A new Gold Star Family monument has been unveiled at Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa, standing tall as a symbol of sacrifice, love, and remembrance. This heartfelt memorial honors families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military — a tribute that ensures their bravery and devotion will never be forgotten.
Honoring Families Who Paid the Ultimate Price
The Gold Star Family monument serves as a powerful reminder of the families’ sacrifice and enduring strength. The monument’s design — featuring a hollowed-out silhouette of a soldier — symbolizes the heartbreaking absence of those who never returned home.
“The gold star represents their sacrifice and their courage,” shared Gold Star Mother Jean Uffalussy. “The symbol of the soldier here that’s hollowed out represents the fact that they’re no longer with us.”
Uffalussy’s son, Staff Sgt. Patrick Dolphin, dreamed of serving his country from a young age. “He lived his life training himself. He read books on military history,” she recalled. “He slept in pup tents in the woods with his helmet. He had a night vision helmet, goggles and he had a BB gun.”
Her son’s dedication led him to the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for more than 11 years in Iraq and Afghanistan before he gave his life in 2011. For Uffalussy, this monument is a lasting symbol — not just of Patrick’s service, but of every fallen hero’s legacy.
A Community Effort to Honor the Brave
The creation of this touching memorial was made possible through the Veterans Council of Hillsborough County, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., and countless local organizations and volunteers. Together, they raised the necessary funds to bring this tribute to life — a true example of community dedication and national pride.
“This memorial is really the pinnacle of capturing all the sacrifices that our veterans and their families have endured for defending our freedom,” said Frank Strom, director of Hillsborough County Consumer and Veteran Services.

A National Vision by the Woody Williams Foundation
The Woody Williams Foundation, named after the World War II Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams, played a pivotal role in bringing this project to life. The foundation’s mission is to establish Gold Star Family monuments across all 50 states, ensuring that every community honors the families of fallen heroes.
Through this partnership, the Veterans Council’s Gold Star Monument Committee has not only contributed to Tampa’s legacy of remembrance but also strengthened a national movement of gratitude and recognition.

A Place to Remember, Reflect, and Reconnect
For Jean Uffalussy and other Gold Star Families, this monument is more than just stone and steel — it’s a place to reflect, remember, and reconnect with those they’ve lost.
“This is a monument to the families that missed their loved ones every day,” Uffalussy said. For her, each visit is both a moment of reflection and a renewed promise to live a life worthy of her son’s sacrifice.
“I think the fact that he died makes those of us that survived try to live a life more worthy,” she added, her words echoing the deep emotional core of what this monument represents.
The Origin of the Gold Star Symbol
The term Gold Star Families traces back to World War I, when families displayed service flags bearing blue stars for each loved one serving in the military. If that family member did not return home, the blue star was replaced with gold, signifying their ultimate sacrifice and the family’s immense loss.
This simple yet profound tradition continues today, embodied in monuments like Tampa’s — where the gold star shines as a beacon of remembrance and gratitude.
Preserving the Legacy of Heroes
The Tampa Gold Star Family monument is more than a memorial — it’s a testament to the enduring love of families who have given so much. It reminds every visitor that freedom isn’t free, and behind every hero is a family whose courage continues long after the battlefield falls silent.
As Tampa joins this growing national effort, one truth remains clear: America will never forget its fallen heroes or the families who bear their loss.
Every star tells a story — of love, sacrifice, and honor. Visit the Gold Star Family monument in Tampa and discover the legacy that continues to shine for generations.
