Tampa Named a Top Rental Destination in Florida by RentCafe

Tampa ranked fourth among cities in Florida for rental activity during April, according to a recent report from RentCafe, a nationwide apartment-search website.

To compile the findings, RentCafe’s research team analyzed rental-listing data across the 150 largest cities by population in the contiguous U.S. with a relevant listing inventory sample. Researchers ranked each city based on four metrics (availability, page views, favorites, and saved searches) and compared their averages as of the most current month in 2024 versus the same month in 2023.

Tampa secured fourth place overall in the Sunshine State, driven by the number of apartment seekers interested in relocating to Tampa, as well as local demand. Currently, available apartment listings are down 4% year over year, but page views have surged by 99% since this time last year.

According to the report, page views are calculated as the total number of monthly page views for the most recent month at the city level divided by the total renter population in the city.

The city jumped 42 spots to No. 47 nationally, outperforming prominent rental cities such as Miami, Houston, and Augusta in popularity for April.

In Florida, Orlando claimed the top spot for rental activity, followed by Port St. Lucie and Hialeah.

St. Petersburg also made the list, coming in at the ninth spot, despite experiencing a 45% drop in page views.

A Redfin report revealed that Tampa Bay rents have declined by 4.3% year over year, with the median asking rent at $1,765, higher than the national rate of 1.2% and an asking rent of $1,648.
