Tampa may be gearing up for one of its most closely watched mayoral races in years, and Gary Hartfield is emerging as a name to watch. With about two years left until the 2027 Tampa mayoral election, the local entrepreneur is weighing his decision to enter the race — a move that could shake up an already competitive political landscape.

Two candidates — Alan Jared Henderson and Julie Magill — have officially filed. Mayor Jane Castor, limited by terms, will not seek re-election. And while former Mayor Bob Buckhorn and current City Council member Bill Carlson are seen as potential front-runners, Hartfield’s entry could add a fresh, dynamic voice to the conversation.

A Business Leader with a Vision

Hartfield, the owner of Serenity Village Insurance & Consulting in South Tampa, hasn’t yet declared his candidacy, but he has taken a significant step by launching a political committee called “Innovate Tampa” in early July.

“I’m looking at the Mayor’s office because I believe Tampa is at a turning point,” Hartfield said. “Our city is growing fast, but we’ve got to make sure no one gets left behind. I’ve built my life on creating opportunities through business, through service, and through community. I’m ready to bring that same spirit to City Hall.”

Supporters like Valerie Goddard, a Tampa resident and registered agent for Hartfield’s political committee, believe his leadership style will resonate with voters. “We are excited to support a community leader who can help us build Tampa’s future together,” she said.

A Track Record of Service and Entrepreneurship

Describing himself as a “serial entrepreneur”, Hartfield has worn many hats — from serving as Executive Director of the Polk County Opportunity Council to writing his memoir, “Stand,” chronicling his personal journey through entrepreneurship, family challenges, and personal loss.

His dedication to community runs deep. Hartfield serves on the All Hart Foundation, United Way Suncoast, the Council of Tampa Bay, the St. Joseph’s-Baptist Health Board of Trustees, and CareerSource Hillsborough Pinellas. His past public service includes roles on the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority and the Plan Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization.

Addressing Tampa’s Most Pressing Challenges

Hartfield’s potential platform focuses on job creation, small business support, and solutions for affordable housing. He has voiced particular concern about the rising cost of living and the impact of property insurance rates on Tampa families.

“I have skills that brought me success in business,” Hartfield said. “Now, I want to apply those skills to the issues facing our city. Our community needs more jobs, greater support for small businesses, affordable housing solutions, and relief from the rising cost of living, including property insurance. These are big challenges, but together we can deliver real change for Tampa families.”

Growing Support Ahead of a Big Decision

Although he has yet to make an official announcement, Hartfield is already gaining traction among local business leaders. Hugh Campbell, founder of AC4S Technologies, expressed his enthusiasm: “Gary represents the next generation of leaders we desperately need at the municipal, state and national levels. I am supporting Gary for Mayor of Tampa — let’s go!”

With early support building, a compelling community-driven vision, and a clear focus on innovation, Hartfield could be poised to turn the 2027 mayoral race into one of the most talked-about elections in Tampa’s history.
