Tampa International Airport (TPA) experienced a significant increase in summer passengers, with nearly 2 million people passing through the airport in August alone. TPA served over 1.91 million total passengers in August, representing a 9.9% rise from August 2023. Additionally, the airport welcomed 124,061 international passengers, a 28.2% jump compared to the previous year.

July Continues the Growth Trend

In July, TPA reported serving more than 2.13 million total passengers, marking a 5.5% growth compared to July 2023. The airport also accommodated 135,889 international travelers, up 19.6% year-over-year. This consistent growth demonstrates TPA’s expanding role as a critical hub for both domestic and international travel.

Leadership Drives Success

Chris Minner, executive vice president of marketing and communications, attributed the airport’s record-setting traffic levels to the leadership of CEO Joe Lopano, who has led TPA for roughly 14 years and will retire in April 2025. Lopano, recently recognized as a “Most Admired CEO,” has been instrumental in prioritizing global access for the Tampa Bay region and cultivating strong relationships with airline decision-makers.

Building Strong Airline Relationships

“When Joe got here, the priority was on creating global access for the Tampa Bay region,” Minner said. “So we take a really coordinated approach to developing the relationship the airport has with all of the decision-makers at the airlines that fly to Tampa International Airport and that could fly to Tampa International Airport.”

Lopano’s Legacy and Economic Growth

Lopano’s regional strategy and subsequent growth at TPA have earned him a substantial raise and bonus as he prepares for retirement. Minner noted that TPA collaborates with community partners to highlight “all the prosperity and opportunity” in the region. This collaboration is a driving force behind the addition of new nonstop flights, creating millions of dollars in annual economic impact for Tampa Bay.

Rising Business Travel to Tampa Bay

While Tampa’s renowned beaches continue to attract tourists, Minner pointed out that business travel is also on the rise. The availability of daily flights encourages business travelers to incorporate TPA into their schedules rather than opting for other airports. This helps position TPA as a preferred choice for international and domestic connections.

Tampa Bay: A Lucrative Market for Airlines

“Not only do we have a globally recognized, award-winning leisure destination market with those 35 miles of powdered sugar, white sand beaches, we are also an incredibly lucrative corporate market with Fortune 500 corporations and nearly 40 companies that have brought their corporate headquarters to the Tampa Bay region since the pandemic,” Minner said. This dynamic blend of business and leisure creates a “very compelling opportunity” for airlines worldwide.

Record Profits and Economic Impact

This surge in passenger volume is resulting in record profits for TPA. According to Minner, the airport earns revenue every time an airline lands a plane, uses ticket counters and gates, and from passengers who use airport services such as parking, dining, and rental cars. These sources generate more than $20 per passenger for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, funding major projects like the $1.5 billion Airside D facility and new express curbside lanes worth a combined $320 million.

Expanding Facilities to Meet Future Growth

With TPA serving approximately 25 million passengers annually, the airport is preparing for future growth, expecting to serve 35 million passengers by 2037. The Airside D facility, which will add 16 new gates, marks the first new airside in 20 years and is essential for accommodating both domestic and international travelers.

Meeting Current and Future Demand

“We absolutely need Airside D,” Minner emphasized. “We need it today for international flights, but we also need it today just for the totality of passengers arriving to the region.” This expansion is a crucial step in ensuring Tampa International Airport continues to meet the demands of its growing passenger base while supporting the region’s economic growth.
