Top Prize Awarded to Tampa Chef at International Cuban Sandwich Festival
The International Cuban Sandwich Festival drew a huge crowd to historic Ybor City, with a diverse array of vendors from around the world competing. In the category of “Traditional Cuban Sandwich,” Tampa’s own Chef Alex Planchart clinched first place.
“I’m proud to say I took home 1st place this year in the World’s Best Traditional Cuban Sandwich! It’s a dream come true!” wrote Chef Alex on Instagram. “If you would like to try this award-winning sandwich, come down to @tampa_taproom this week!” If you’ve never visited before, you can find Tampa Taproom at 13150 N Dale Mabry Hwy. The Cuban Sandwich is loaded with ham, spiced pork, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard, and mayo, all served on fresh Cuban bread.
This local gem also serves up a fiery fried jalapeno burger, Coney Island hot dogs, golden brown mozzarella sticks, and a tasty Philly cheesesteak flatbread. You can view the full menu on its website.
Sandrita’s (1412 W Waters Avenue), a relative newcomer to Tampa’s culinary scene, took second place in the Traditional Cuban Sandwich competition.
