The University of Tampa has introduced a new nickname as part of a strategic effort to enhance its national presence.

Instead of the commonly used “UT,” the institution will now be referred to as “UTampa.”

President Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg emphasized that this change aligns with her vision to elevate the university’s standing as a model of higher education. Her goal is to make UTampa a recognizable name both nationally and internationally. “There are numerous other UTs in the higher education space, including the universities of Texas, Tennessee, Toledo, Toronto, and Tulsa,” Dahlberg stated. “Since its founding, the University has been closely linked to the city of Tampa, and by calling ourselves UTampa, we can strengthen that association, eliminate confusion and assert our pride in our university and our city.”

This shift highlights the university’s prime location on 110 acres of riverfront property in the heart of downtown Tampa. Dahlberg pointed out that Tampa is evolving into a world-class destination, and it’s crucial for the university to emphasize its presence within this thriving city.

Along with the name change, UTampa has also unveiled three new logos that reflect its refreshed identity.

The announcement was made approximately four months after Dahlberg assumed her role at UTampa. In previous interviews with the Business Journal, she outlined her ambition to significantly enhance the university’s impact and reputation as a cornerstone of her leadership.

Additional objectives include a focused effort on increasing the four-year graduation rate, expanding the university’s endowments, and deepening its connection with the local community to support the growth taking place at UTampa.
