Tampa’s MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) has introduced its newest permanent exhibit, the Flight Club Drone Zone, presented by Suncoast Credit Union. This hands-on experience gives visitors the opportunity to take control of drones, race against others, and dive into the world of cutting-edge technology that is shaping industries across the globe. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced drone enthusiast, this exhibit offers something for everyone to explore.

An Exciting and Safe Space for All Ages

The Flight Club Drone Zone is a dedicated indoor space designed to provide a safe and thrilling environment where visitors of all ages can experience the excitement of drone flying. Under the guidance of expert MOSI educators, guests can get hands-on with a variety of drones, race one another, and learn about the real-world applications of drone technology. The exhibit showcases drones of various sizes and functions, while videos demonstrate how drones are used in fields such as agriculture, search and rescue, and aerial photography.

Empowering the Next Generation of Drone Operators

MOSI’s mission to teach both kids and adults how to operate drones is at the core of this exhibit. “Drones are transforming our lives, from enhancing efficiency to creating new careers,” said Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of Suncoast Credit Union. “We’re thrilled to partner with MOSI to make this technology accessible to the Tampa Bay community.” This exhibit provides an opportunity for visitors to gain valuable insights into drone technology, sparking curiosity and hands-on learning.

From Pilot Program to Permanent Exhibit

The Flight Club Drone Zone began as a pilot program in MOSI’s IdeaZone in 2023. After gathering feedback and refining the concept, MOSI expanded the space to accommodate multiple participants, replacing fragile drones with more durable models, and redesigning the area to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. With snag-free mesh walls and a variety of fun challenges, this interactive exhibit is designed for both competitive drone races and collaborative learning.

Preparing for Future Careers in Drone Technology

This exhibit is more than just an opportunity to have fun with drones—it’s about preparing visitors for future careers in drone-related industries. With drone job postings doubling between 2021 and 2023, MOSI is providing an introduction to these growing career opportunities. “We make science real, hands-on, and show how it impacts our future,” said MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith, reinforcing the museum’s commitment to fostering interest in emerging technologies.
