Raise a Glass: Sky Puppy, Ybor’s Newest Bar, Has Arrived
Sky Puppy Celebrates Grand Opening in Ybor City
Sky Puppy celebrated its grand opening on September 13, marking the occasion with 13 craft beers, 13 tap handles, and 13 brewing vessels—all located at 1313 East 8th Ave. in historic Ybor. The space’s interior design was crafted by Leonard Construction Company, and the bat-themed decor was designed by Florida artist Copper Tritcheller. Her unique sculptures can be seen throughout, and even the beer taps are bronze casts of bats.
A Location with Deep Personal Significance
For owners Matthew McKinnon and Danielle Vergnaud-McKinnon, this spot holds deep personal significance. Previously the home of New World Brewery, 1313 East 8th Ave. is where they had their first date and later became engaged. When the building became available, Danielle knew it was the perfect place, stating to That’s So Tampa, “This is the space; this is where we have to do it.”
Florida Artist Brings Bat-Themed Decor to Life
Inside, the century-old brick wall has been preserved, stretching up to the high ceilings and creating an intimate yet grand atmosphere. The bar seats 45 guests with sleek benches, custom booths, and a small bar-top with a standing area. Leonard Construction carefully preserved the original brick from the facade and integrated it into the entrance of the brewhouse, where Matthew brews 13 varieties of lagers, pilsners, stouts, sours, and IPAs. For those looking for something different, a variety of natural wines is also available.
Artistic Vision by Copper Tritcheller
Adding to the unique ambiance are Copper Tritcheller’s sculptures of bats, placed throughout the bar. Each beer tap is a bronze bat, while larger sculptures decorate the space. A giant bat stands guard at the door, and others hover near the standing area and above the brewhouse.
A Unique Artistic Inspiration
Tritcheller’s fascination with bats originated from her time in Thailand, where she studied at a foundry and bonded with other women. Bats frequently flew around the temples at dusk, and their movements inspired her to create bat sculptures, which she affectionately calls “sky puppies.” Her artistic touch has become an integral part of Sky Puppy’s identity, adding a playful yet sophisticated design element.
“We Hope to Elevate the Craft Beer Experience in Ybor”
Matthew and Danielle began working on Sky Puppy as soon as COVID restrictions lifted. After years of hard work, the result is a thoughtfully crafted and unique bar, offering excellent customer service, an impressive craft beer selection, and distinctive interior decor. “I hope we can contribute to the Ybor community and elevate the craft beer experience in the area,” says Danielle. “The craft beer industry is the best to be a part of—we receive a lot of support.”
Sky Puppy is shaping up to be one of Ybor’s newest favorites.
