Downtown St. Petersburg anticipates the introduction of an exciting new Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar

More than two years have passed since the closure of the downtown St. Petersburg restaurant and event space, Iberian Rooster. Signs of activity have recently emerged at its location within the historic Kress building at 475 Central Ave.

The new concept for this space has been unveiled: Concrete Jungle, a two-story bar and restaurant inspired by Tulum, Mexico, featuring a downstairs lounge. Concrete Jungle is the latest venture from the Hunger Thirst Group, led by owner Stephen Schrutt, known for operating establishments like The Avenue, Park & Rec, No Vacancy, Good Fortune, Lost & Found, Dirty Laundry, and the upcoming Summer Camp.

While an official opening date for Concrete Jungle is yet to be announced, the establishment is currently in the process of hiring staff. Resumes can be submitted via email to mgmt@concretejunglestpete.com.

“It’s been a long process, but it’s been really cool to be able to bring my vision to life,” Schrutt said in a news release. “I think the two levels of the space really help bring the duality of the concept together. It’s a place that people can enjoy no matter the time of day.”

Executive Chef Jason Gordon will be in charge of the menu, which will showcase a selection of lighter and healthier dishes. This includes items like jackfruit flautas, charred watermelon, wood-fired catch of the day, and offerings inspired by the vibrant flavors of Tulum and the Yucatán Peninsula.

The restaurant will provide seating for up to 150 patrons both indoors and outdoors. On the main floor, guests can enjoy their meals along with a well-stocked bar. Downstairs, a separate bar and lounge area will be available, reminiscent of the space where events like open mic nights used to take place during its days as Iberian Rooster.

The upstairs bar will offer a cocktail list designed for easy sipping, with a focus on fresh and light libations. Meanwhile, the cozy downstairs bar will specialize in tequila and mezcal-forward cocktails. The beverage programs have been expertly crafted by Niall McCourt, who serves as the beverage manager at Lost & Found.

As a bonus, there will now be restroom facilities downstairs, a convenience that wasn’t available before.

Once it officially opens, Concrete Jungle will welcome guests from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays, serving lunch and dinner daily. Additionally, it will offer a weekend brunch starting at 10:30 a.m.
