Canvas GWX, a major project within the sprawling 50-acre Gas Worx development, officially enters its construction phase with a groundbreaking event
Construction has recently commenced on the inaugural project in what is anticipated to be a groundbreaking wave of redevelopment in Ybor City, initiated by the 50-acre GasWorx district. Known as Canvas GWX, this townhome community characterized by its “industrial chic” aesthetic represents the first significant construction undertaking to kickstart just beyond the confines of GasWorx.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor was present at the ceremony, underlining the pioneering nature of this project and highlighting how GasWorx is already acting as a catalyst for increased investment in Ybor. This includes the development of more housing and businesses in nearby areas, all of this happening within a mere six months since the commencement of construction on GasWorx itself.
Major groundbreaking outside historic Ybor City
The townhouse units at Canvas GWX will range from 2,100 to 2,400 square feet in size and will feature rooftop terraces as well as a communal green space. The architectural design draws inspiration from the industrial aesthetics of Ybor City’s warehouses and factories, many of which have been transformed into artist studios, lofts, and maker’s spaces. Additionally, an existing commercial building on Nebraska Ave. is undergoing restoration for future commercial purposes.
Gas Worx, a collaborative effort between Shaw and KETTLER, is situated between the Ybor Historic District and the Channel District. This development encompasses over 300 units of affordable housing, representing the largest private investment in affordable housing in the city’s history.
“The beauty of Ybor City is truly the people who call it home – engaged, passionate, and dedicated to this area. Today we celebrate each and every person who has left their mark here and I look forward to seeing more people call Ybor City home.” Shaw said. “Gas Worx will have a place for everyone.”
