Tampa’s Chabad temple hosted a vibrant celebration for the first night of Chanukah on December 25, 2024, marking the beginning of the Jewish festival of lights. The public menorah lighting took place at the Tampa City Hall Plaza, drawing families and community members to downtown Tampa for an evening filled with tradition and joy.

A Night of Celebration and Community

The event, which began at 5:30 p.m., featured music, games, and food to bring people together in the festive spirit of Chanukah. Guests gathered around the traditional menorah, where the first candle was lit to honor the eight-day holiday. This annual celebration not only commemorates Jewish heritage but also fosters community connections in Tampa.

The Story Behind the Festival of Lights

Chanukah, or Hanukkah, celebrates the re-dedication of the Jewish Holy Temple in Jerusalem in 165 B.C.E. After defeating the Syrian-Greek army, the Jewish people found enough pure oil to light the Temple’s menorah for just one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted eight days, symbolizing resilience and faith, which are at the heart of the holiday.

2024’s Chanukah Observance

This year, Chanukah runs from December 25, 2024, to January 2, 2025. Each evening, families and communities gather to light the menorah, adding one candle each night. The menorah serves as a powerful symbol of perseverance, illuminating the triumph of light over darkness. FOX 13 News initially published the story.
