The man accused of fatally shooting a woman in Tampa on Tuesday morning has been arrested, police announced Wednesday. Derrick Dempsey, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder, according to a release from the Tampa Police Department.
Officers were called to a home on St. Joseph Street after reports of gunshots. They found the victim, a woman in her mid-30s, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to the hospital but died from her injuries shortly after.
Witnesses told detectives that Dempsey and the woman were arguing inside a pickup truck before the shooting occurred. According to the witnesses, Dempsey exited the truck, retrieved a gun, and a gunshot was heard moments later.

“This is a tragic loss that no family should have to endure,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “We are thankful this dangerous individual is no longer on the street and for the partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office that led to a quick arrest in this case.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Tampa Police Department in arresting Dempsey, ensuring swift action to bring the suspect to justice.
